University of Lynchburg’s LOVE is the first Virginia Tourism Corporation program LOVEwork sculpture to be installed on a college or university campus in Virginia. The sculpture blends the College initials “LC” with the word “LOVE” to create a version of the sign unique to the LC community. College Housing Coordinator Rhonda Johnson spearheaded efforts to get the sign on the LC campus and was inspired by a tee-shirt designed by College Designer Katharine McCann. The LC LOVE design was a hit on tee-shirts. Johnson noticed the resemblance to the LOVEwork sculptures she has seen and suggested the idea of transforming the design into a large sign. Students teamed up with Johnson to seek the VTC grant and coordinated efforts on campus. John and Laura Crank, graduates from the LC class of 1979 and owners of Richmond-based 1717 Design Group, designed the sign. Witt Masonry constructed the base and ImageBrite, Inc. fabricated the letters. Even before installation, LC LOVE proved so popular that it became the theme of the College’s 2016 Homecoming. Visitors are encouraged to take photos with the LOVEwork and share with loved ones on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/VirginiaisforLovers or on Twitter with the special hashtag #LOVEVA.
